After participating in the Environmental Enterprise Development Initiative in 2003, a group of young women decided that they wanted to begin a savings a credit cooperative in order to gain access to small amounts of capital for their small businesses and formed the Uaminifu (hope in kiSwahili) SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative).
Now in its fourth cycle, Uaminifu has been exploring ways to not only use their savings for personal income generation activities, but also to do joint entrepreneurial ventures. They have recently registered as the Waminifu Women's group and are planning their first group activity: a composting facility at which they can combine their agricultural wastes to generate higher energy compost and sell the resulting organic fertilizers.
