Washington
DC, USA. February - May 2005. A
training program aimed at assisting high school students in DC with their
Community Action Project, focusing on the environmental sustainability of local businesses.
EVI assisted a group of seven tenth graders from the Cesar
Chavez Public Charter High School of Public Policy with their Community Action
Project (CAP). The Community Action Project requires them to identify a local
problem and then develop and implement a project to address that problem. EVI
introduced the students to the various challenges to sustainable development
posed by American society's current production, distribution, and consumption
patterns.
Recognizing these challenges within the DC community, the students
designed a project to interview, evaluate, and advise local businesses on how
to incorporate more environmentally and socially sustainable business practices
into their daily operation. As a part of their four month project the students
engaged in a variety of participative learning activities including role
playing, student-led discussions, primary and secondary research, public
speaking and community outreach.
