Conventional toilets use approximately 2.9 gallons per flush
which means every year for an average family about 21,000 gallons is used. Companies
are now producing dual flush toilets that use on average either 0.8 or 1.6
gallons per flush. It allows the user to choose what level of flush they need
after their usage. On average these toilets use 1 gallon per flush. In a year
this can reduce the amount of water used down to about 6900 gallons.
Besides conserving water, installing a dual flush toilet can
reduce water bills for families. One user said that it took approximately 16-18
months to pay off the toilet that costs about $350. Also, with less water usage
per household requires less capital to be spent on water and sewage resources. One
company Caroma is working on a 0.8/1.2 gallon dual flush toilet which they hope
will become part of the new global standard for water usage. For more
