An organization that promotes conservation on the ground
through their supply of tools, training, and support to local conservation
groups to help promote environmental awareness.
Rare supplies training to activists from around the world at
three locations including the University of Guadalajara, University of Kent,
Bogor Institute in Indonesia, with plans for a fourth location in China.
Through these training programs students of the program learn that
environmental threats come from underlying social, economic, and political
factors. Therefore, graduates learn how to do outreach programs that will get
their communities excited about conservation taking into account the above
factors. Rare utilizes three main programs including Rare Pride, Rare Radio,
and Rare Enterprises to help with community outreach efforts. Rare Pride
efforts utilize mascots based on local animal species through posters,
billboards, and rallies to encourage conservation. Rare Radio broadcasts soap
opera dramas created to bring awareness to destructive practices to the
environment and how those practices can be changed. Rare Enterprises focuses on
changing unsustainable practices in communities and offering alternatives such
as eco-tourism to making conservation efforts profitable for communities.
In the past two years Rare has trained nearly 50 local
conservationists who have run Pride campaigns in 40 countries. In addition,
they have helped to start and support three new eco-tourism enterprises which
are owned by ten indigenous groups. Since Rare's establishment in 1973 they
have worked in more then 40 countries at 90 different sites. For more
