David has worked with EVI since January of 2008, where his responsibilities range from research and principal investigation to workshop facilitation and training. He provides economic and environmental research specific to EVI project locations with emphasis on market assessments, value chain analyses, and natural resource management. His international work most recently includes assessing youth employment opportunities and assisting youth development practitioners in linking youth with growing and sustainable market sectors. In addition, David explores innovations in payments for ecosystem services with particular attention on the incentive structures needed to induce private sector actors to reward environmental stewardship. He is a certified EVI trainer and curriculum developer with experience adapting and delivering trainings in both domestic and international contexts. Recently, David has been working with the EVI Green Business Green Jobs Program to assist microenterprise practitioners in understanding how the growing green economy can benefit their clients and identify mechanisms that will enable the quantification of environmental impacts of green businesses. Prior to joining EVI, David served as a community development worker with the Peace Corps in Thailand. For two years he lived and worked in a rural village of Northeast Thailand near the border with Laos. His primary work included assisting people living with HIV/AIDS in developing a sustainable aquaculture enterprise and working with married youth to develop microenterprise opportunities in cricket-raising and mushroom cultivation.
David is a strong advocate for the development of local economies and the critical role that environmental enterprises play in strengthening livelihoods in low-income communities. He believes that economic development can only sustain local communities if it targets economic, environmental, and social profits. He holds a Certificate in International Development from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a Masters in Public Policy degree from The Johns Hopkins University with a specialization in Economic Development and Social Policy. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan.
