The Environmental Enterprise Development Initiative is a network of organizations in Tanzania working together for the promotion and development of the environmental enterprise sector. The EEDI was conceived in March 2005 after several meetings and conversations with representatives from local NGOs and government departments in Lushoto, Tanzania, on the best approach to involve the local youth to incorporate environmental and social responsibility in their work. A parallel goal is to build youth capacity to increase their income over the long-term by running microenterprises. Since 2005, the initiative has spread from the original Lushoto cluster to other regions, with organizations from the Arusha/Moshi and Dar es Salaam regions forming their own respective clusters. Approximately 25 organizations operate as member organizations within the EEDI’s Learning Cluster, comprising both government and non-government organizations which play some role in environmental enterprise development. This ranges from training-of-trainers delivery through to technical expertise, and from working directly with farmers or youth to working on larger local government initiatives. Cluster organizations collaborate on training and capacity building, and provide program support for one another in achieving the objectives of EEDI. EcoVentures International facilitates collaboration, provides environmental enterprise training and resources and organizational capacity-building services and resources, and assists in market development research.
