EBPA's mission:
To reuse industrial waste materials, such as plastics and glass, as a means of decreasing environmental pollution and encouraging recycling among communities.
Incentive for involvement in EEDI:
Several opportunities exist to create environmental microenterprises using recycled materials, which also decrease the volume of hazardous materials in landfills or burn pits.
Current Activities:
In 2004, EBPA began teaching at-risk youth how to collect would-be plastic waste, such as plastic bags and bottles, and then to clean and sort them to sell to recycling industries and plastic companies for profit. Recently EBPA has been granted land from the city of Dar es Salaam and the organization hopes to expand its activities beyond collection and resale of unprocessed post-consumer plastics to adding value to the plastics by beginning the recycling process themselves.
Other Accomplishments:
EBPA also contributed to the construction of the first tire house in the world, built outside of Dar es Salaam entirely of used automobile tires. EBPA looks for innovative ways to reuse waste materials and director Chalres Lugenga also designs clothes and accessories that use waste items such as drink can tabs and used calling cards.
