April of 2006, the EEDI-Arusha/Moshi came together with the rest of the
EEDI clusters in Dar es Salaam for a capacity building workshop hosted
by EVI. There they were introduced to SavePower, a curriculum
that guides people of all ages through the formation of a savings and
credit group. EEDI-Arusha/Moshi members decided to bring the
curriculum back to the members of their organizations and in September
of 2006 hosted a large training of approximately 60 youth, ages 18-22,
from member organizations Ngarenaro Youth Self-Help Group and Women's
Economic Empowerment Movement. It was the first training of the
SavePower curriculum to occur in Tanzania. The leaders of the
training, David Elias and Godliving Munuo, also incorporated leadership
training and healthy living skills into the three-day workshop, with
assistance from the Community Development Officer. The two groups have started a strong run. The course will be a difficult one as the groups are very new and very large. Keep checking back for updates on their progress. |
