Summer Brown has over fifteen years experience across several areas of sustainable development. She began her development experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer with Mayan farmers in the highlands of Guatemala. Most recently, she held the position of project director in Nigeria for an organization and a program focusing on peace building and conflict resolution. Her projects there included work based in the Niger Delta, an area rich in natural resources which are extracted in most cases at the expense of the people and the environment. Her work also included engaging with community based organizations (CBOs) and focusing on youth and livelihood issues in designing programs using a multi-stakeholder approach where the needs of the majority can be heard and change affected. While project director, she was part of a number of regional teams to develop strategies for peace building in West Africa, especially along the borders of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire and specifically focused on youth.Prior to this, Summer worked on programs focused in Eastern Europe, West Africa, Southern Africa, and Latin America. While Summer's major focus has always been creating projects and systems that lead to sustainable long-term development, her thematic focuses have ranged from microenterprise agricultural technologies, health and HIV/AIDS, organic agriculture production, civil society and democracy strengthening and using media to create platforms for dialog. Some of the organizations that Summer has worked with include Search for Common Ground, The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, EnterpriseWorks Worldwide, the Peace Corps and the Foundation for Community Development of Mozambique. Summer has an MBA with a focus in Global Strategy from American University. Her goal in obtaining an MBA was to determine overlap between not-for-profit organizations and for-profit organizations - where each could learn from one another as we look at ways to create sustainable business that is vested in long-term growth while protecting our planet and providing an equitable present and future for everyone. One of the things Summer is most passionate about is learning and telling people's stories. She is currently working on a documentary film which tells the story of Dja, a rain forest in Cameroon and the communities that are challenged with preserving the forest and finding viable livelihoods.
